What does the Bible say about Forgiveness?

A collection of Bible verses on forgiveness.

The Mechanism of Forgiveness

Matthew 26:28 "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

Ephesians 1:7 "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace"

Colossians 1:13-14 "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."

Numbers 15:25 "The priest is to make atonement for the whole Israelite community, and they will be forgiven, for it was not intentional and they have presented to the Lord for their wrong a food offering and a sin offering."

Acts 8:22 "Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart."

Hebrews 9:22 "In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness."

The Call to Forgiveness

Matthew 6:12 "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."

Matthew 6:14-15 "For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

Matthew 18:22 "Then Peter came and said to Him, ‘Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?’ Jesus said to him, 'I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.'"

Mark 11:25 "And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

Luke 6:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."

Luke 17:3-5 "So watch yourselves. "If your brother or sister[a] sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them." The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

Acts 10:43 "To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

Ephesians 4:31-32 "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

Colossians 3:12-13 "Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

I John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Our Example

Luke 23:34 "Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’"

Acts 7:60 "And falling to his knees he [Stephen] cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep."

Our Attitude leading to Forgiveness

Matthew 5:44 "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you"

Luke 6:27 "But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you"

Romans 12:17-21 "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

1 Peter 3:9 "Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing."
